I'd start by explaining the new activation model in Windows Vista: Forget all you knew about Windows XP or other legacy operating systems. Windows Vista has no I386 directory, nor Winnt and Winnt32. Windows Vista is shipped as a DVD Image with Setup.exe which is the extractor of the WIM Image (Windows Imaging). The Image includes all of the versions of Windows Vista (Business, Enterprise and Ultimate - your obvious choice...) and the tool that decides how to extract the right image is Setup.exe, according to the CD Key (Serial Key) you provide during the initial setup process.

This means you need to have a Windows Vista Ultimate CD Key if you want to have Media Center and several additional benefits on your PC.

The activation process has been greatly enhanced in Windows Vista, and even corporations now need a local activation server (called KMS - Key Management Server) to activate their VLK's (Volume License Keys). However there are bypass keys that enables corporations to manually install their machines (MAK Keys) but you still need to activate them.

Best method would be to contact your local Microsoft subsidiary and ask them for a Beta DVD. This way your both legal and able to obtain a CD Key. It will take a week or so to get it, but hey... wouldn't you feel much better with a legal copy of the software?

Note that each activation key is available for three activations, so you may use it either for three installations on the same PC, or to install three different PC's.
